Boston Old Meets New: Northern Avenue Bridge

Boston Old Meets New

Old Bridge Control House

The top image shows a section of the old Northern Avenue Bridge and the bridge keeper’s house against the modern skyline. The bottom image shows the old bridge keeper’s house by itself.

The Northern Avenue Bridge was built in 1908 and carried vehicular traffic until 1999, when it became a pedestrian bridge. It is a swing bridge designed to pivot open to let boat traffic enter Fort Point Channel. In 2014, it was deemed not safe for pedestrians and is now kept open until they decide what to do with it.

Yesterday’s image showed the open bridge against the morning sky.

Thank you, Alex. It was a challenge to compose because the skyline seems to go on and on. How much to keep vs crop out. This was the happy medium, I hope. Cheers =)
