Hampton Beach Sand Sculpture Contest

For well over a decade, Hampton Beach in New Hampshire has hosted a sand sculpture contest. This year’s contest included ten artists and 200 tons of sand trucked in for the event. While we watched, the artists finished their labors of love and hoped to win a prize of up to $3,000. They completed these works in under 23 hours time on the beach, though many had sketchbooks lying about that showed designs they made back home. Their vision and skill are just amazing. Most of them work in other mediums (e.g. ice, snow) as well as sand. After today, the sculptures will be sprayed with a glue type of substance and remain up for a few weeks.

Incroyable! I saw this on the news and in fact it turns out my stepson was up there. It’s just unbelievable how talented the artists are. I’m glad the sculptures get to survive for a goodly while and don’t just get washed away 😊

I’m glad you could enjoy them. I’ve seen them a few times. You’d think all of these sculptors are from the coast but many are from the Mid-West. There may have even been one from Ohio. FYI, they don’t sculpt with beach sand. They use inland sand that likely has more clay and will hold together better. Cheers!

I am so amazed of this incredible art done at the beach. The details!

We saw a gentleman in San Diego who makes a new one everyday.

Last year we went to the one on Revere Beach. I believe that is in July. It was awesome to see sand artists from around the world come to take part. Wish my photos of the sand sculptures were as good as yours 🙂

Oh, I love sand sculpture contest! It´s so amazing what these artists can do, in a medium as delicate as sand. And to think that after a few weeks it´s all going to be destroyed… I couldn’t bare that with my creations. 😉 Love the second shot!

Thanks, Sarah. I feel the same way about the fleeting nature of sand sculptures. I hestitate to make snowmen if the weather will be too warm in the coming days.

Even though it’s only a few miles from us, I didn’t make the trip over to see the sculptures. Thank you for taking me there in great photographs!
